It’s no wonder why people love crispy fried chicken. First, there’s that hot, crunchy crust that’s cooked to perfection. Once you bite into that, you get super juicy chicken that’s packed with flavor. People tend to reserve fried chicken for when they go out to eat, as this dish can be messy and difficult to prepare at home.  As masters of fried chicken in New Jersey and Staten Island, we have some tips to help you create this delicious dish at home. Of course, if you want your chicken served hot and fresh without the mess, stop into any of our LaRosa Chicken & Grill locations for a full menu of grilled, roasted and fried chicken

Use the Entire Chicken

You can fry up an entire bird - not just the drumsticks. Slice the breasts into pieces and separate the thighs from the drumsticks. We also recommend letting the chicken sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature to ensure it cooks evenly.

Prepare Your Ingredients

The ingredients you use matter, as they each have a distinct purpose. To start, get your buttermilk and flour ready. Fill a large plastic bag with flour, seasoned with paprika, salt and pepper. Paprika helps brown the chicken, while the salt and pepper add flavor.  Dip the chicken pieces into the buttermilk and then into the flour. Let them sit. Be sure to give this step a lot of time, as people sometimes rush through it. The chicken should sit on a cookie sheet until the flour has a paste-like texture.

Use a Cast Iron Skillet

Many people are surprised to learn that they don’t need to invest in a costly deep fryer to make fried chicken. A heavy-bottomed cast iron skillet is actually best because it retains heat and stays at a consistent temperature.  Use vegetable oil (olive oil will make the chicken taste bitter) and add as many pieces of chicken as your skillet can fit. When browned, reduce heat, cover the skillet and cook the chicken for 30 minutes. To finish off the crispiness, remove the cover, turn up the heat and fry until golden brown.  There are many excellent recipes on the internet that will help you achieve the perfect fried chicken. Once you get comfortable cooking the chicken, you can perfect the seasonings to your taste. In the meantime, LaRosa Chicken & Grill can satisfy your cravings with the best fried chicken in NJ.
